Classwork...
In class today, we read and discussed your homework from Tuesday (John Hale and Cotton Mather's diary, although we didn't get to the diary due to time). Hale's reflective apology for the witch trials of 1692 seems to suggest quite the challenging rhetorical situation, and it also seems to imply that the audiences to whom it was directed had very different needs, needs that had to be balanced between the amount of guilt Hale wished to express, and the amount of offensiveness he took the risk of producing if other culpable leaders (such as Cotton Mather) turned on him and denounced him as having gone to "the dark side."
Homework...
And speaking of Cotton, since we didn't get to the diary of Cotton Mather, a fun read indeed, your job is to read it thoroughly, respond to it with annotative remarks-- questions, comments, insight--and post your response on your weebly page. Remember to title this one "Cotton Mather's Diary" Rhetorical Analysis.
In your response, you should identify the warrants/arguments Mather presents, as well as the particular strategies he uses to present his arguments. Due on Monday [along with this: You also have until Monday, October 13 to compose a written analysis of Edwards/Plato, in which you explicate the Connections between Plato's allegory of the cave (Republic, book 7) and Edwards' Sinners in the Hands...This should be published individually on your weebly under individual assignments.]
