Today, we began list 5 for our "Word within the Word" series. Rember the first 4 minutes of class are for your "4" column word list. Sentences are due on Thursday.
We also began Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet today. Here's a recap of what we learned:
* Shakespeare was born around April 23, 1564 and died on April 23, 1616. This gave him 52 years to work his word magic.
* 5 years before he died, King James I authorized the King James Bible, written to ensure the Holy Scriptures would be in the common, everyday language of the general populace.
* Shakespeare's language also appealed to the common, everyday English speaker --not just the intellectual and social elite.
* Women did not act in his plays due to laws and customs.
* His themes were universal in nature.
* He wrote three types of plays:
- Comedies (simply means the play ends on a happy note--not necessarily "funny.")
- Tragedies (means the play has a sad, miserable ending.)
- Histories (plays are built around the amazing, mostly true events of a historical figure or figures.)
