So tomorrow in class we will take our weekly vocabulary quiz. (List 7) Be sure to study on Quizlet.
We will also take the test R & J; you can check out this study guide here: http://nfs.sparknotes.com/romeojuliet/
Know the following:
What does Prince of Verona mean when he says to Montague:
"Come, Montague; for thou art early up
"to see thy son and heir more early down."
Also know who causes what...
* The Friar Lawrence is both the author and the guilty "executor" of the plan for Juliet to drink the sleep-potion; it's also his failure to get the letter to Romeo that leads to Romeo's return to Verona, slaying of Paris and subsequent suicide.
* Know that the Nurse doesn't know about Juliet's plan to fake her suicide.
* Be able to offer a reasonable explanation why the 1968 movie version of R&J leaves out Romeo's slaying of Paris in front of the Capulet tomb.
* Be able to explain what was out of the two protagonists' control, and what was in their control.
* Be able to explain "iambic pentameter" and "blank verse" and "sonnet".
*
After the test, we will discuss the Common Core Connected non-fictional piece below. Read it at home and answer question number 5 on paper. I will collect these.
If time permits on Monday, which it probably won't--but if time permits, we are going to begin our argumentative essay. The essay will be on a position you take about Romeo & Juliet's death: fate or free will? Did they die due to fate-driven circumstances outside of their control, or did they make choices that led inevitably to their deaths. We will focus on: building an introduction, citing texts as evidence for your assertions, creating a thesis statement and using the "book-end" method to start and finish your paper. Oh, and you will learn how to pivot between claim/counterclaims as well. A preview to the prompt:
Argument:
The tragedy of R & J is a result of free will, not of "the stars" or fate.
or
The tragedy of R & J is a direct result fate that was outside of the characters' control.
ARGUE YOUR POSITION.
