Classwork...
Ya' gotta love Aldous Huxley. Perhaps Huxley said it best in "Words and Behavior" when he states, "Now language is, among other things, a device which men use to suppress and distort the truth." He goes on to suggest that when a particular reality is too painful or too complex, we often resort to false narratives in order to simply wrap our minds around things we want to be true, whether they really are or not.
This led to a discussion on the rhetoric that proceeds out of the mouths of supporters and detractors of war, of slain children, of beheaded journalists, of "collateral damage," and of whether people like Kanye West ought to be rewarded by society with millions of dollars for his epic self-promotional rants that seem to reaffirm our society's penchant for egotism. (Just think of the term, "selfie.")
With all this discussion on how words marshal behavior, and how behavior is sometimes offensive, undesirable, and downright objectionable, we looked at the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, and his poem, "Do not Go Gentle."
I also introduced SWIFTT, an acronym that stands for an approach to unpacking literature and poetry. While reading, look for SYMBOLS, WORD CHOICE (Diction), IMAGERY, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, TONE, and the resulting THEME. Here's an example of the beginning of a SWIFTT analysis to give you an idea of what I expect you to accomplish tonight with this poem:
