Classwork...
In class today, I let you guys drive. I really want to do more and more of this; I really want to put you in charge of making meaning from the readings that I give you, and allow you to share your findings with your class.
Both sections did a pretty good job of discussing the text, although both sections have to figure out ways to make the class discussions more meaningful with everyone engaged and contributing. That said, here's the Speaking/Listening rubric I will be using whenever we have a class discussion:

It works like this: if you make a CLAIM (Statement) about something in the text, you earn 2 points. If you add some EVIDENCE from the text, you earn another 2 points. If you control your pitch, your volume, your pace and your pronunciation, you get an extra point; if you reference what someone else said, you get 3 points for listening, and if you respond to what they said by adding (defending), subtracting (refuting) or qualifying their comment, you get an extra 2 points, for a grand total of 10! Now...about your homework:
Homework...

Be sure to write your SPES paragraph using a STATEMENT (an arguable claim), some generalized PROOF, an EXPLANATION of that PROOF (here's a great place to I.C.E. your quote) and a wrap-up SYNTHESIS/SUMMARY. You may complete this on the back of the Hollow Men handout. You will turn this in for a grade.
Hope to see your parents tonight at the
